Stage 02 · Structural Revision

Substantive Editing

Strengthen the argument, structure, and scholarly narrative behind the sentences.

Why this stage matters

The problem this service solves.

When a manuscript’s central contribution is difficult to follow, sentence-level correction is not enough. Reviewers may encounter unclear research aims, sections that do not build logically, unsupported transitions, or a discussion that does not fully explain the significance of the findings.

Substantive editing is collaborative by design. The editor makes the manuscript easier to follow, but does not take ownership of scientific or scholarly decisions that belong to the author.

The result is a draft with a more visible contribution, a more deliberate structure, and clearer priorities for the author’s final revision.

Scope questions

Before you choose substantive editing.

If your question depends on the manuscript itself, include it in your quote request and we will answer against the actual brief.

Is substantive editing the same as copyediting?

No. Substantive editing works on argument, organization, and evidence flow. Copyediting focuses on sentence-level correctness, clarity, and consistency once the structure is stable.

Will you rewrite my conclusions or invent content?

No. We work only with the evidence and meaning in your manuscript. Where a stronger claim would require new analysis or author judgment, we leave a clear query.

Do I receive tracked changes?

Yes. Delivery includes a tracked version, a clean version, and an editorial memo so you can review both the changes and the reasoning behind them.

Can you edit before I choose a journal?

Yes. If journal choice will materially affect length, structure, or positioning, journal-selection work can be completed first or alongside the structural brief.

Will the editor check references and formatting?

The editor flags obvious inconsistencies, but full reference and journal-format compliance belongs to Journal Manuscript Editing.
